Passion or Paralysis? Rethinking Resilience in Healthcare

Passion or Paralysis? Rethinking Resilience in Healthcare

Medicine can feel like a spell — pushing us past our limits until something breaks. Over 60% of clinicians live with chronic pain, but we push through, protecting identity over health. I know the cost. Is this resilience — or a warning? It’s time to name the culture and choose healing.

The practice of medicine casts a spell — and turns you to stone.

Look at this story:

A busy, dedicated interventional cardiologist.

He became paralyzed from repetitive strain injury.
But he wouldn’t stop working.
⚠️ He couldn’t stop.

So many of us in healthcare suffer from chronic pain and musculoskeletal injuries.

In fact, the majority of clinicians (>60%) do.

But we push through it.
We’re expected to.
Until something breaks.

Physically. Mentally. Spiritually.

I know the feeling — it’s my story too.
I just kept going. I couldn’t stop.

Was it passion… or fear of letting go?

Doctor — heal thyself.

We need to name this culture.
To confront the masks we wear.
The identity we protect — even as we become paralyzed.

Let’s not turn to stone.

Is this a heroic story of resilience?
Or a warning for all of us?

ESSAYS AND REFLECTIONS

Excellence often comes at a hidden cost: silence. In my monthly newsletter, I share essays on medicine, leadership, and healing — stories that speak to the heart as much as the mind. Subscribe and join a conversation about finding meaning beyond performance.
